Batteries that are not operating properly can be detrimental to your vehicle which is why it is important to maintain your batteries to keep your drivers on the road. 

Major Reasons for Battery Failure - 

The most common reasons for battery failure are improper charging, excessive vibration, and the wrong battery. 

Improper Charging

Improper charging can be attributed to a few different issues, including loose cables, corrosion, parasitic loads, and/or reduced alternator outputs. All of these issues can be resolved with simple examination and maintenance. 

Vibration

Vibration can be easily avoided by properly securing the battery. To test its security, attempt to shift the battery - if it does not move, your battery is good to go. 

Incorrect Battery Type

Signs you’re using the wrong battery - 

  • Frequently needing jump starts with regular use of the electrical system 

  • Difficulty starting during average cold weather

  • Batteries are not recharging during normal driving


The main things to consider when deciding on a battery are type and rating, which also depends on your vocation. Typically, commercial vehicles will use an Absorbed Glass Mat (AMG) or flooded cell berry. AMG batteries are said to cycle better and last longer but come with a significant upgrade cost. 


With winter quickly approaching, taking the time to inspect and clean your batteries could save you from a lot of downtime in the future. Here are some winter tips to keep your business on the move: 

  • Clean Off the Terminals - ensure your batteries are free of corrosion

  • Plan Out the Ride - batteries simply do not operate the same in severe weather. Plan your drives with care. 

  • Turn Off Auxiliary Loads - It is natural to leave your radio, air conditioning, navigation tools, etc. on when you turn off your vehicle. This can have a very negative impact on your battery as well, so simply turning off the auxiliary load will help protect your battery’s lifespan.
